Born on November 19, 1917 in an illustrious family, Smt. Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru

She studied

She studied at prime institutions like Ecole Nouvelle, Bex (Switzerland), Ecole Internationale, Geneva, Pupils’ Own School, Poona and Bombay, Badminton School, Bristol, Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketan and Somerville College, Oxford.

She was serving as a PA in the Prime Minister's Office.

She studied at prime institutions like Ecole Nouvelle, Bex (Switzerland), Ecole Internationale, Geneva, Pupils’ Own School, Poona and Bombay, Badminton School, Bristol, Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketan and Somerville College, Oxford. She was conferred Honorary doctoral degree by a host of Universities globally.

Before assuming the post of Prime Minister, she was the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Department. This happened for a short period during LK Advani's cabinet.

Gandhi's story

People always mistake Indira Gandhi to be related to Mahatma Gandhi's family. Although the Nehru family has always been closely related to Mahatma Gandhi's family, Indira got her last name not from him but from her husband Feroze Gandhi, who was unrelated to the famous Gandhi family.

Indira maintained a friendly relationship with United States chairwoman Linda Johnson, who often met her and attended dinners hosted by her. Girl power brings us all together, am I right?

He burned British toys.

Watching his father and the rest of the nation struggle against British imperialism, Indira developed a very strong character. From a young age, he learned to reject British goods, as he felt that accepting them strengthened their economy. She burned her dolls because they were made in England.

She conducted the first nuclear test.

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Indira Gandhi was a visionary in many different fields. She was the first leader to take steps towards making India a world nuclear power, eventually testing a successful nuclear bomb called the Smiling Buddha in Pokhran.

His own party

While everyone knows Indira Gandhi as the face of the INC, in 1978 she broke away from the INC and formed her own party. It was called 'Congress (I)', with 'I' standing for Indra. She then proved successful in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections, but failed after his death.

Death

The leader served as India's second-longest prime minister, and was assassinated by his personal bodyguards in 1984 over a feud with the Sikh community. His ashes are now kept at the Raj Ghat in Delhi.
